Startup Gives Twitter a Private Messaging Option

Name:   Umagram Quick Pitch:  Umagram lets you tweet private message links to people who don’t follow you. Genius Idea:  We’ve all done the Twitter direct message dance. We look up people we’re trying to get in touch with on Google and find their Twitter handles. We send a message asking them to DM us. After they follows us, we send back another DM with our e-mail address in it. They e-mail us. We reply, and are thus FINALLY able to convey the information we wanted to. Umagram aims to help its users skip this tedious process and instead cut straight to the private, unrestricted conversation. Here’s how it works: A user logs in with a Twitter account. To initiate a conversation, the user composes a tweet that mentions anyone with whom that person wants to participate in the conversation. Umagram posts the tweet with a unique link to the conversation on its messaging platform. Because users need to sign in to Umagram with a specific Twitter identity, only people named in t...

Google News Experiments with Twitter Integration

Google News is currently testing a new feature that allows users to integrate their Twitter accounts with the news aggregator. Search Engine Land reports that the experiment appears in a “Friends” section that some users can see on the bottom right-hand column of Google News. If you enter your Twitter username into the open text box and hit “save,” a list of updates featuring news articles by those you follow will appear. Google says only articles found in Google News will be shown. Though we’ve yet to see if and when Google will make this feature more widely available, this test run seems pretty consistent with recent attempts to make Google News more customizable. A few months ago, Google News began featuring a “News For You” section based on users’ specific interests. At this time, the site was also overhauled to highlight location-specific, breaking news alongside less time-sensitive pieces. Google News’s experiment with the Friends section also comes at a time when news cons...

Twitter to Release a Real-time Analytics Solution This Year

Twitter plans to launch a free analytics dashboard that will help its users – especially businesses – understand how others are interacting with their tweets. Member of Twitter’s (Twitter) business development team Ross Hoffman has revealed at the Sports Marketing Summit that Twitter plans to launch the dashboard in the last quarter of 2010. He was speaking in the context of sports, but there’s no reason to believe the tool won’t be available to other users, too. The team that works on this tool is the one behind Trendly, which Twitter had acquired in June. Trendly was all about highlighting important changes in the traffic that reaches your website, and, according to Hoffman, Twitter’s analytics solution will show you which tweets are spreading and which users are influential in your network. There are two interesting things about this announcement. First of all, if the product will be free, then Twitter won’t be making any money out of it, and one possible business model for Tw...
