Mobile phones to cost more from April 1

Mobile handset prices will become more expensive as Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee today announced one percent hike in the Central Excise duty for 130 items, including phones. Come April 1 and central excise duty on mobile phones will be raised from the current four per cent to five per cent. "The increase in central excise duty is detrimental as it will make mobile phones more expensive and provide impetus to the grey/un-branded market," Nokia India VP and MD D Shivakumar said. According to business research and consulting firm Frost & Sullivan, the overall budget may be positive, but no tax incentives to the telecom industry remains an area of concern. "The Budget 2011 covered too little on telecom, while this is one of the fastest growing sectors. (There were) no significant steps on the spectrum related issues," said the company Program Manager(ICT Practice - South Asia and Middle East) Parminder Kaur Saini. Telecom equipment manufacturer

Budget Simplified or Highlights

The main impetus of the budget is to improve the growth rate and get it to 9 percent in the near term and to a double digit rate in the medium to longer term. The other two areas of focus are Infrastructure development especially in Rural India and Improving Governance by shoring up Systems and bringing stricter control on institutions. Key points of the budget: The government is very keen on ensuring that inflation is curbed and food security is ensured for all citizens. Food items: Since inefficient distribution has been found to be the culprit for the sky rocketing of food prices, the FM has proposed to focus on reducing Production and Distributions bottlenecks. Food, vegetables, Meat etc will show an easing of prices in the medium term future. Education: A higher allotment of funds in the form of over 24% hike as compared to last year for the Education Sector. Income tax: More modernization of the taxation system is being mooted. Google Declares War on Content Farms

Image
Google has announced a major algorithmic change to its search engine, subtle in nature and perhaps unnoticeable to many users, but one that should dramatically improve the quality of Google’s search results. With this move, Google is targeting content farms – a common name for low quality sites whose main goal is to attract search traffic by piling up (mostly) useless content, usually by either producing large amounts of low-quality text or by copying it from websites with original content. Google does not go into details of the change which should impact 11.8% of Google’s queries (currently only in the US, with plans to roll it out elsewhere over time), but it does say that it will affect the ranking of many sites on the web. “This update is designed to reduce rankings for low-quality sites—sites which are low-value add for users, copy content from other websites or sites that are just not very useful. At the same time, it will provide better rankings for high-quality sites—sites wi

Facebook Rolling Out Brand New Photos Interface

Image
Facebook‘s all-new design for displaying photos now appears to be rolling out to quite a few users. It features larger images, a lightbox-type UI and other features that put Facebook in even more competition with Flickr on the casual and social photography front. We got wind of these new Facebook Photos features some months ago around the end of September. And while some users have had this feature for a while, we were beginning to wonder why Facebook was delaying a general roll-out. However, Facebook did confirm yesterday that the new photo viewer was on its way to all users soon; and tonight, we’re seeing this new interface from several accounts. One major benefit, from Facebook’s perspective, is that users will be able to browse through many photos in the lightbox layer without disrupting the underlying page and “losing their place.” Other features include hi-res photos, photo-download links and bulk tagging options. In fact, as we noted last fall, many of these feature up
