Google Finally Upgrades Feedburner

Believe it or not, Google hasn’t forgotten about Feedburner. The RSS feed service has received an experimental new interface that better matches Google Analytics and looks like it might actually integrate into other Google AdSense and Webmaster tools. The interface doesn’t work for every component of Feedburner — if you need to access feed management or change certain settings, you can continue to use the old interface. The new interface — which is accessible via feedburner.google.com/gfb/ — shows real-time stats for clicks, views and podcast downloads from across your feeds. This is really powerful, especially if you use the Feedburner Socialize service to auto-ping Twitter (Twitter) when you publish a post. This can let you track how users are referred and what RSS clients are being used to access feeds. The stats take a lot of the information that used to be spread across multiple panels and put it into one interface. You can also view the last two hours of activity for a feed

Microsoft: Windows 8 Is 2 Years Away

In a blog post on its Dutch website, Microsoft said that the next version of Windows, Windows 8, is in the works, but that the new operating system will not hit the market for about two years. The news came at the bottom of a post commemorating Windows 7’s one-year anniversary, and suggests a substantially later deployment date than the one detailed in a leaked slide deck about the forthcoming product earlier this year. According to the slide deck, the next version of Windows should include a Windows App Store similar to the one Apple unveiled for Mac last week, logins via facial recognition and faster boot-up times. It also cited early 2011 as the intended launch date. Given that Apple will at minimum release its new Mac OS X Lion operating system by that time, it seems that Windows 8 will have to develop some impressive features to stay competitive. Yet a three-year gap between operating systems is nothing new for Microsoft. The Seattle-based company has historically taken mu

Microsoft Windows 1.0 press kit

Image
The Original Microsoft Windows 1.0 Press Release   On November 20, 1985, a small technology company out of Bellevue, Washington launched a 16-bit graphical operating system for the PC. Originally called Windows Premiere Edition.1, it soon became the foundation for the world’s most prevalent operating system and for one of the most dominant technology companies in history. 25 years later, Microsoft is a household name and co-founder Bill Gates remains the world’s wealthiest person. Back in 1985 though, there was no guarantee of success or knowledge that Windows would dominate the world. It was the beginning of a revolution in computing. Ray Ozzie, Microsoft's chief software architect, is blogging again. And for his first post he uploaded a gem: the press materials for Microsoft's launch of Windows 1.0. Inside the Windows press kit. Here's an excerpt from a news release by The Waggener Group, which continues to be Microsoft's main PR agency as Waggener E

Facebook Dials Up Security with Temporary Passwords via Text

Facebook has released a new feature to help users protect their accounts when they log into public computers: one-time passwords. The feature is simple: users that want to use a public computer but don’t want to risk using their sensitive passwords on it can text “opt” to 32665. If their phone is linked to their FacebookFacebook account, they’ll be texted back a temporary password that can only be used once and expires in 20 minutes. The feature “should be available to everyone in the coming weeks,” according to Facebook. One-use passwords make perfect sense; once you’re done with your Facebook session at an airport or a hotel computer and log out, nobody else can get in because the password will have expired. Even if someone installed a keylogger, it wouldn’t matter. You don’t have to worry about whether you need to change your password because you accidentally told FirefoxFirefox to save it. The world’s largest social network has been focusing in on security recently. Last mo

More Ways to Stay Secure ( from Facebook )

Image
Facebook provides a number of ways to help you protect yourself and your account, and today they are announcing new features to help make your experience on Facebook more secure. First, they're launching one-time passwords to make it safer to use public computers in places like hotels, cafes or airports. If you have any concerns about security of the computer you're using while accessing Facebook, they can text you a one-time password to use instead of your regular password. Simply text "otp" to 32665 on your mobile phone, and you'll immediately receive a password that can be used only once and expires in 20 minutes. In order to access this feature, you'll need a mobile phone number in your account. They're rolling this out gradually, and it should be available to everyone in the coming weeks. Second, the ability to sign out of Facebook remotely is now available to everyone. These session controls can be useful if you log into Facebook

Google News Experiments with Twitter Integration

Image
Google News is currently testing a new feature that allows users to integrate their Twitter accounts with the news aggregator. Search Engine Land reports that the experiment appears in a “Friends” section that some users can see on the bottom right-hand column of Google News. If you enter your Twitter username into the open text box and hit “save,” a list of updates featuring news articles by those you follow will appear. Google says only articles found in Google News will be shown. Though we’ve yet to see if and when Google will make this feature more widely available, this test run seems pretty consistent with recent attempts to make Google News more customizable. A few months ago, Google News began featuring a “News For You” section based on users’ specific interests. At this time, the site was also overhauled to highlight location-specific, breaking news alongside less time-sensitive pieces. Google News’s experiment with the Friends section also comes at a time when news cons

5 Spices That Can Help You Lose Weight

Image
Although we’re inclined to scour the Web in search of the best diets and meal plans, the truth is, some of the tools to weight-loss success are already on your spice rack! Here are five ingredients that not only add flavor to your favorite dishes but can help in your battle against the bulge. Spices That Can Help You Lose Weight 1. Cinnamon A 2003 study published in Diabetes Care showed that as little as one teaspoon of cinnamon per day can boost the body’s weight-loss ability by reducing blood sugar and promoting healthier processing of carbohydrates. It also lowers LDL cholesterol (bad cholesterol) by seven to 27% and total cholesterol by 12 to 26%. Plus, cinnamon has been shown to prevent the metabolic syndrome commonly seen in pre-diabetics. But before you go on piling the spice by spoonful, note that cinnamon contains a chemical called coumarin , which can lead to liver damage if consumed in very large amounts. 2. Cayenne The main ingredient in spicy cayenne— capsaici
